Which fuse!?

Hi y'all. The heater on my Westy has stopped working, most likely the fuse. It's an eberspacher that runs from the diesel tank. As I understand it, the orignal heater underneath the van was moved under the bench seat. Does anyone know where the fuse is likely to be? The fuses for the orignal bus seem to mostly be under the dash, but there are three behind the drivers seat near the leisure battery. Any advice would be appreciated, particularly as it's now required for winter camping! Cheers

Here's the original wiring diagram

http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~johngau ... nglish.pdf

The auxiliary heating fuse is E1 on this diagram on the B Pillar behind the drivers seat next to the battery box. It was originally in a small black box with two fuses. The one for Eber heating is rated 25amp. If you have three fuses something has been modified.

Thanks for the advice, very useful. I shall go and investigate!

I just ruled out the fuse issue, which has left me a bit puzzled. Are there any other common faults with these heaters. It's played up before and it was electrical, but all the electrics seem to be in order. PS there was only two fuses on the B pillar, not 3 as I had thought.

Cheers

Are you saying that you didn't carry out your monthly startups for the last 6 months or so?

Check you have power at the heater and the switch for it is correctly connected. then it's a case of diagnosing the heater itself manuals for most will be available online. There are a number of startup checks the device will make for safety, I haven't looked at them but it is likely to check the voltage is sufficient?

I think the startup voltage is something like 11.7 volts and with a near 12 amp draw from the spark plug and heating coil, together with old tired wiring and earths, what appears to be a healthy liesure battery voltage can be pulled down below this threshold at the heater.

Easiest test is to simply 'start the engine'...the increase voltage to around 14volt is usually enough to overcome any deficits through voltage drop.

Also...that TWO fuse holders with 25/16 amp fuses, are a little prone to tarnishing (loss of spring tension) and can be the cause of a non starting ebber and fridge auto ignition issues.

Are you getting any cold air from the blower? there is also a small micro fuse situated in the control relay near the BBB charger.

Thanks again for the advice, I will go forth and investigate further. However, beyond starting the engine and trying it, the other tips are a little beyond my rubbish (but growing) understanding. Could you explain the other checks you suggest in laymans terms? Thanks! :)

Hi, still no action when I started the engine. The fuse holder for the two fuses is quite new and the fridge ignition is fine so I assume that's not the issue either. At least I've ruled out a few options. Any further thoughts? Perhaps it needs a good professioanl service? If so, any idea of cost? Cheers

Ascertain which heater you have first - you say it has been moved from underneath the van to under the seat which is impossible due to the original's size. Put up a pic if you cannot read the info from the unit. Looking for a fuse to the original heater isn't going to help much.

Will do. It has the eberspacher control unit, which loses power if I remove the fuse on the B pillar, so the orignal fuse location seems to be correct still. I guess it must be an Eber if it has the Eber control unit. Will take a photo...is there more than one fuse for the heater (i.e. one for the control unit and one for the heater itself?).

Not necessarily - I use Eberspächer Combitimers for Webastos and a couple of other ones will also run Webastos.
There may be a fuse in the bottom of the heater's ecu depending upon the model you have.
Put up a pic of the timer/controller that you have also.

A pic of the controller is here: http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=ebe ... tedIndex=7" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The heater unit is now under the split charge unit, so a bit tricky to get to.

My van has been restored recently and the heater etc all came out. Perhaps it wasnt reinstalled properly?

Anyway, will post some photos.

Cheers for your help so far!

That controller can be used on Webastos also!
I would hazard a guess that you have a modern D2 (Eberspächer Airtronic model) under there, so no point looking for a separate ecu with a fuse in - that would only be true with an old D2L. You should have two fuses if it is a D2 - a 20A one for the heater and a 5A one for the 701 controller.

Thanks. I could just about make out the Eber logo on the main heater under the split charge unit, which cnfirms it, although not sure which model it is. If I remove the 25 fuse, the controller loses power - surely if the control panel was on a seperate 5 fuse it wouldnt be affected by the removal of the 25?? Thinking about trying to find an engineer to service it properly, as its probably in need. Just need to find an engineer!
