uprated brush pack for alternator?

Hi all,

some advice on brush packs and alternators please. I understand that when running, the engine should be delivering anything upto 14.2 v to the balttery. I have one of these modern gel batteries and I am periodic non start due to flat battery symtpons. Now, I'm not saying there aren't a dozen other faults, but I've done the usual suspects. So in this case, please lets assume the alternator and charging system is not at its best. (I read that a gel battery can give a good surface reading but actually can be duff underneath and need a stronger output from alternator.) I have a gel battery in t'other van...and that runs and starts lovely....but is charging at 13.7 13.8 whereas on Ermie I am lucky to get 13.3v.

So...if I upgrade to the larger alternator would it make a difference? (upto 90 amp I think)
Do I need to get my existing alternator refurbed (ie the whole thing not just the brush pack?)
Ages ago someone on here linked to an ebay add for a brush pack that packs a bit more punch....I can't find it now and have no idea what to put in ebay as it wasn't necessarily for a T25

cheers to those that understand this electrical gubbins!

I think so Covkid.

I have replace the battery to starter cable, done all the earths, remade the connections, the starter bush has been done, checked and greased the starter. Dizzy has been off and all the magnets oiled to make sure that they were not sticking and causing issues with timing, Have visually checked (not replaced) all vacuum lines.

Still getting the slow starting that sounds like flat battery or a starter that is so laid back its beyond horizontal!! But, if the thing has been in th sun all day, and the solar panel has been trickle charging it, and the indicator is in the green (apparently jut over 13V but I need to check) it will (usually) start. I am concerned in the amount of voltage drop on starting...more than the other van, so maybe the starter is still at fault.

so, having done nearly everything else, I am focussing on the charging at the moment, and getting it the best it can be.

so yep - if that brush pack is ok for our busses, I would be interested in the link!

Also - any benefit to fitting the larger alternator. There is a split charge on there as well which isn't on the other bus.

regards and thanks

(how's yours by the way....you sorted your slow start out yet??)

Just a thought Em, (and I really don't know a lot about it) does your solar charger have a reverse discharge protection to prevent it loosing battery charge at night. The thought that darkness will suck power out of your batteries is an odd one but I have read about setups that seem to include them so I guess it must be true! :D
