Hi Guys,

I'm having to replace the wires that connect the mains charger (20amp) to the leisure battery. I'm using 50amp 6mm2 wire. I'm looking for an automotive 35amp fuse holder but can only seem to find 30amp fuse holders like this one:

Does anyone know where I can get a 35amp fuse holder?

Yes but it has to be a Maxi fuse not a Mini one.

Ah I found one of these in Maplin's today but they're quite big aren't they. I have very limited space around the leisure battery. Is there anything smaller I could try?

There is a fuse holder attached to the main battery like this:
It takes one of those glass fuses and I found a 35amp fuse of this type in a local motor factors. I can't find one of those fuse holders though. Would this style of fuse holder be suitable and any idea where I can get one?

I also found a typical automotive fuse of 35amps but all the fuse holders that I could find of that type take a maximum of 30 amps. Is using a 30amp fuse an option?

The mains charger is 20amps and the wire I am using is rated 50amp.

I used two 20A fuses in parallel. Seems to work fine and has a certain "bodge" appeal.

Why don't you use strip fuses as used for the glow plug circuit. You can get a very neat fusty holder with a m6 stud which holds the fuse and a ring terminal. I used these in my leasure circuit. The fuses are cheap available everywhere..

The holders are avaliable from veichle wiring products for a few quid each.

Ah I saw one of those too Lloydy today in the car stereo shop. So that's another option to consider although it's quite big too. Maplin also sell the maxi blade fuse holders that Oldie suggested and sell a 35amp fuse too. So I've got options but they are all quite bulky at the moment and the leisure battery compartment is already a tight fit.

Looks like the one I showed in the pic earlier in the thread. Holds up to 50amp 30mm glass fuses and they sell 35amp fuses. Does that look like it'll do the job?

That is only a 17.5A continuous current fuse.
Glass fuses are rated at the there fusing current, continuous current is half the fuse rating.
Blade fuses are rated at there continuous current fusing current is twice the continuous current.

Is this battery in the space behind front seats? if so, you have plenty of space under the actual seat.

Ah so that's a no-go too. Back to Oldie's original suggestion.

And actually I've had another look and there is plenty of space behind the battery so I should be able to get the the maxi blade fuse holder in there with a bit of a squeeze. They sell them in maplins too (http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/water-resista ... lder-mx15r" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) so I can get it before the weekend.

So my next question. What would be you suggested connector to between the 50 amp wire coming from the mains charger to the 8AWG wire that comes with the fuse holder?

Also, one end of the mains charger is connected using a 2 way connector.
I thought it might be handy to do the same at the leisure battery end so I can unclip the wires if I want to remove the battery. Is that a good or bad idea?

I used a butt splice to connect in my maxi fuse holder. I used a blowtorch to do the soldering. Make sure to cover it with heatshrink of course. You can just see the joint in this photo.

That's right Lloydy. I hadn't noticed it before. I did a bit of re-organising of the existing wires and there's plenty of space behind as you said so I'm gonna go with Oldie's original suggestion of a maxi-fuse holder with a 35amp maxi-fuse.

That looks tidy but I've not soldered before. On my existing connnections there is a yellow ring terminal that connects another blade fuse holder for the heater (only 5amp). Could I use one of those attached on the opposite side of the existing one? I guess it would need to be able to take an AW8 cable (which is 8mm2 if I read the conversion table right?) that is attached to the maxi fuse holder . Are those yellow ring terminals suitable for that type of cable?

On eBay looks looks like you can order various size and colours. I guess 8.4mm would be the right size for me to connect the maxi-fuse to the battery terminal?

My 50amp cable is also only 6mm2 so I guess I need some kind of reducer crimp that goes 8.4mm2 to 6mm2? I'll see if I can find something on eBay. Please let me know if I'm barking up the wrong tree
