1.6 diesel install

Thought I would create a thread based around installing my 1.6 Diesel engine. This will hopefully help others along the way, too. Although I won't be actually fitting the engine myself I will be keeping a close eye on things and I will first need to make sure I have everything for when it goes in to the garage. I will post many pictures and please feel free to comment on anything you feel necessary that will assist with the install.

I believe the engine to be a 1.6 NA.

It is hopefully going in the garage around the end of November to have the restoration finally finished. The van and engine currently resides under cover at my mums. Now, I can get my head round bodywork and brakes/suspension etc but engines are a different story.

My first questions are:

Can you tell from the pictures if I'm missing anything?
I presume I will need a gasket set prior to fitting, any ideas what's best?
The cam belt is slightly off, is it best to just get a new one?

Please feel free to suggest anything else I should do.

At the end of the day, I don't even know if this engine is ok or not. I was assured it was fine by someone on here. Even if it is knackered I will still want to fit a 1.6 diesel. Not exactly sure what all the different letters after the 1.6 mean.

Thanks in advance. Cheers, Jon.

Do you know much about the history of the engine? If not I would definitely fit new belts and waterpump before it goes in :)

Thanks Keytouch. What is cc?

Unfortunately I do not know anything of the history. Could I get a 'belt kit' easily? I like to use Brickwerks so could probably just ask them.

I don't think there's a starter on there but I'm sure there is one in my box of stuff.

Also, I've no idea if there's an oil pump on it? I've been told if I get a new one then a new pick up pipe comes with it. (And I may need a new pipe as I will be removing the car sump to fit a T25 sump)

Cubic centimetres. I was implying that the 1.6D is a bit small and a lot of people find them underpowered especially on long hills or motorways.

Gotcha. Yeah I've listened to the 1.6 diesel debate many times over the years. I've come to the conclusion that whilst I personally have never had an engine in my van then I am going to get this running (hopefully) and use it for a while then consider an upgrade.

Here is the clutch and flywheel I believe will fit. Along with a few tubs of bolts that I have no idea about!

Looks like the black fuse box isn't there. Is this a bad sign?

The black box holds the heater plug relay and fuse. You can buy new boxes from brickwork.
I have the same engine in mine ... just about to remove it from the van and give it a check over and refit.
Check the condition of the three round core plugs under the exhaust manifold... One of mine rusted through.
Good time to recondition your starter if you need to.

get it in and manually wire the glow plugs for now..run a 12v feed to the pump solenoid ...put a can of diesel up high above the engine and run that to your fuel filter..don't bother with new belts or anything new till you know it starts and sounds ok
