In the area of the Igniter button /Control knob there is melting of the plastic. As this is at the front and the flame is at the back of the fridge I am at a loss as to what could cause this problem. Ideas please.

Not enough information. The igniter aperture is top right, the gas control bottom right; what goes in the other bits and how about a picture of the fridge in the camper for other sources of heat such as a grill?

I'd say it's possible that someone's used a long taper to try and light the flame at the back of the fridge. On mine the flame is visible through the aperture that's charred on yours. I think there was supposed to be a hinged mirror so you could see the flame without having to put your face on the floor, but that's just one more "hen's teeth" item for these old fridges nowadays. You can
buy new grilles (if your pockets are deep enough) but they don't seem to come with the mirror, or even the aperture for it to sit in.

I was thinking that was at the top of the fridge

Good thinking CJH. I could not see how the fridge would have caused this damage.
Thanks

That's really quite charred though isn't it. If it's someone trying to light the gas with a taper, they'd have had to hold the taper in the wrong place for quite a while to do that. You'd probably see some signs of this on the underside of the fridge too. And from memory I think the flame has a glass window in front of it, so a taper wouldn't have worked. On reflection I don't think this is very likely after all.
On mine the gas connection isn't far from that point, but a gas leak that's caught fire seems unlikely too.
