Fog lamp - spot lamp: which side??

Just bought a pair of Lucas lamps, one fog and one spot. Is there a convention (or even a logical reason) for which type of lamp goes at which side of the front bumper?

For single lamps on the front, fog left, spot right. The idea is that a single front fog helps you see the road edge, pedestrians, etc more easily and the spot is intended to illuminate more of the road ahead (plus it balances the look!)

Legally, they need to be paired. The only lights that don't need to be paired are rear fogs.
