I have a 1985 1.9 waterboxer which I needs a new exhaust (started it iver the weekend and fumes came out from every join).

Not being a technical kind of bloke on the drivers side behind the silencer is a pipe (heat exchanger?) and on the top of that pipe is a stubby pipe which just goes nowwhere.

As I havent had this long can anyone tell me if it is supposed to be connected to something.

Im also thinking of getting a twin silencer and I've read the bad reviews of the EMPI ones. Are these the ones that are sold by JK?

My van is a 1984 so could be the same as your one, firstly there are no heat exchangers as these are only on Aircooled vans what you are refering to may be the feed to the air box ( i think it sends warm air to it) mine runs on gas so there is no need for it, as for the Empi back box steer well clear, i had one and it fell apart in about 6 mths.

Is your system the early or late one, the late ones are a lt more complex, and more expensive, the easiest way to tell is by looking at where the silencer(backbox) bolts on, if it bolts from the rear using 6 studs/bolts (2x3) then its early if however the silencer is attached at the opposite end to the tailpipe then its a later one.

I've heard that about the EMPI ones which is a shame cos they look really tasty. Whats the preferred alternative to the original backbox then? are there any aftermarket ones that are any good and will make my bus growl?

I have a 'Bluebird Customs' stainless twin tailpipe one on now which sounds nice but they are a tad expensive £270 and they only fit the earlier system. There's a pikey bloke who comes on here called Jes or Jez or Jethro or something like that and he has a rather tasty full stainless twinpipe system on his van, give him a shout.

Result!! I've just had a look at mine and the backbox bolts on at the back.

Wife's not too happy though its pissing down here and i had a look in my work stuff

Does anyone know what type is on a westy? mine is on the way out I heard Alan schofield does them???

JK do good quality German Ernst ones, I got a new front pipe the other week and it fitted perfectly with no drama, as you would expect from the Germans Didn`t look anything like the correct bend, but it went straight on.

Also fitted JK one several weeks ago. Had the brackets , bolts and gaskets. Every thing fitted perfectly, with no problems.
The one I had on previously was fitted about 2 years ago( not from JK) and the pipe at end where it joins the system broke off. I removed it with view to welding it back on ,but found all the baffles rattling about.
After I fitted the new one the fuel consumption became a lot better. I think the morel is don't buy cheep nondescript items. Go for the best.

Thats a damn nice set of pipes youve got there jed - way out of my price range but damn nice anyway.

Certainly do. Have a look on their site. Check the 2 rubber mountings on your bus before ordering, one of mine has partly sheared off it`s rubber, I`ve got a new one to fit when it stops raining Also, new gasket at the turbo end. You should be able to fit a new one in half an hour easy, could be a bit longer to remove the old on though
