Fan belt confusion

I just replaced my power steering belt and attempted to replace my fan belt. I got both from Brickwerks and as they suggested I read the sizes off the old belts to ensure i ordered the correct ones, the power steering belt went on fine but the fan belt (10x875) will not fit for love nor money, it's just too short. As I said the old belt says 10x875 on it so I'm a little confused, anyone else had this problem?

I'll admit I'm a total novice mechanically but I had a mate do the job with me and he's a plant engineer so knows his stuff when it comes to fixing/fitting pretty much anything.

The van is a 1990 Westy california 1.6 TD.

Cheers.

how many belts in total, 3 ?
the one round the water pump is a split pulley, 3 x 13mm spanner keep all shims, the ones you dont need to space act as washers as the bolts would be too long otherwise and also this way you dont loose them , its in the wiki someplace have a read
mm

as above , although you have no 'fan belt fitted'

lower belt goes to the pump , alternator belt comes from the pump to the alt

undo the bolts on the pulley , adjustment is via the shims. DO not throw away unused shims , put them in front of the pulley

you may have a system that's only got one belt from crank to alternator as per the car version of the engine?

Yeah there are only 2 belts in total, one runs from the crank to the altenator via another pulley on the water pump (I think it's the water pump), the other from the crank to the power steering pump.

The belts on our 1.6 TD are:
crank - water pump - alternator = 10x910
crank - power steering pump = 10x763

just to add the 913 is for a 90amp alternator the one you are trying to fit 875 is for a 65amp alternator.

You need to check your sizes because we have a 65A alternator but need a 910 belt.

hi cliff

you might have the pulley of a 90amp on your 65amp . even ecp & carparts4less give the same info as simon baxter apart from 10x913 / 10x910 whats 3mm between fellow t25 owners :D

i still have a 10x875 sitting in the garage, was like trying to get a normal condom on my old fellow (not going to happen)

clift out of interest how much is left on the ajustment bar? as you have a 65a & the pulleys have not been swapped are you at the top of the ajusment? if so you would need the smaller belt 10x875

regards roy
ps excuse any typos

I'm guessing it's a 65A alternator with a 90A pulley. We tried an 875 belt on the basis that we have a 65A alternator and so it should fit but we couldn't even get it on at minimum adjustment. So we tried a 910 belt which fits fine and leaves the alternator in the middle of its adjustment range. That's why I say to check.
