Westy starter battery cover question

This may be a completely stupid question but... it seems pretty dangerous to have a metal cover flap over the battery terminals yes? There's nothing stopping mine shorting the terminals from what I can see. What should be there?

I have a rubber boot over the positive connection.

There should be a plastic cover over the positive post which pushes into the two holes on the top of the battery like this. Or as said, cut a bit of rubber to fit under the cover.

I guess the rubber bit may have fallen off your lid over time. I use the plastic covers that are fitted to new batteries as well to cover the positive terminals. That works fine.

Thanks chaps. Fitted a square of rubber there just in case.
