glow plug wiring

My glow plug light comes on with the ignition, but does not go off, no matter how long I wait! I have simply been counting to 3 and turning the key, the engine starts and only then does the light go out.

Can anyone explain what is supposed to make the light go out? Is it something to do with the glow plugs reaching temperature or is it just a timer? I haven't found a diagram I can work it out from!

Now that I have suspected glow plug problems, my light not behaving properly is not helping my diagnosis!

Cheers,
Dom.

Check that the temperature sender wire is attached, it`s the blue/white one clipped to the sender on the water outlet at the back of the cylinder head (clutch end). If it comes off, or the sender goes south the glowplugs will stay on. Could also be a relay problem or other wiring fault, but I know that this sender makes that problem.

I had this problem and replaced the 7 pin glowplug relay, (£20 GSF), this sorted it, the glow plug light now goes off after 9 secs and engine fires at flick of key.
