Aircooled Thermostat

The thermostat is dead on my aircolled 2ltr Westy. I've read on the Wiki that it's no longer available, and you have to adapt a beetle one. Has anyone done this and do you have any tips? Flaps are currently fully open.

I don't dare look....I know its probably not the right attitude, but what the head don't know the heart can't grieve over!!!
Do the engine heat test with the dip stick regularly, and its not over hot...

How do I do that then?
It's not too bad as when they go, they open the cooling flaps up so it's getting cooled down. It just takes longer to heat up, hence more petrol used and engine wear.
And I definately don't understand the buy a Nissan comment. Now if it said buy a Porsche on the other hand........

ipstick test, get it good and hot (if it ever does in this weather with flaps open) remove dipstick and grasp oily end in hand if it burns you, its running hot. good eh?

Must admit...I have never gone that far....I have just held the pull loop and just below. Never been too hot to touch.....
and as for letting the wife do it.
....exactly how are you going to sell that to her??? I do mine, but then its my van!!!

I'll tell her I'm, er, teaching her how to do maintenance on the van for her benefit, just in case I should fall ill or something. I'm sure she'll buy it!

Now, if my other half tried that line, I would have teaching on washing, school runs, homework, washing -advanced level, housework (that one won't take long - I don't do much!!), just in case I should fall ill or something.....
You may of course already be fully conversant and practised in all of the above...if so, you have nothing to worry about!
He does do the vast majority of the cooking, so I'm not really complaining!!

I can do all the other stuff, but boy do I hate cooking. Bigtime. Although I do a nice bowl of cereal! Now pass the dipstick. To the wife.
