Smell of petrol

'84 T25 1.9 petrol
Tank full - no smell of petrol
Tank 3/4 full - smell inside, front off side
Can't smell anything outside
Any ideas please.

Does your van have the 2 expansion tanks under the front foot wells linked to the main fuel tank? I have found that there is a leakage from the breather pipes (?) when I have filled the tank - they almost act as an overflow. Now I don't fill right to the top (when the fuel shoots out of the filler !) and this has cured the leakage but there is still a smell. My next job is to replace the offending hoses as I don't think this has been done since new!!.

Replaced my breather hoses for modern fuel hose. Although (theoretically) they don't carry fuel, they do have to handle the vapours and the occasional 'slosh' of petrol. Bit of a fiddle getting them on but once done....
Chances are the old braided ones have gone brittle and are splitting at the ends. Job is much easier with wheel removed and corner supported. Thin arms are useful too.
