Howdoo Phil,
Rebuilding my engine too at the moment, two types of sealant are shown in a genuine vw manual i've seen pages reprinted from, one type is applied in a thin bead around your new water jacket gaskets, on the face that contacts the head only. none on the green or black 'o' ring liner seals, and another type is specified for smearing on the faces of the head nuts before tightening, presumably to prevent coolant leaking out, as opposed to actually locking the nuts in place like loctite, as that is usually smeared on the threads not the nut faces.
i got a toothpaste-sized tube of the gaket sealer from a vw main dealer, about a fiver, but the stuff for the head nuts was 35quid! i'm wondering if there is an equivalent product by loctite or hylomar or someone but haven't got that far into the rebuild yet. still waiting for mi camshaft to arrive, hope some of that is of help to you mate, wasserleaker.

I used a loctite product (gold in colour) but dont know what part number it is.. will see if its in my tool box at lunch
Used it for all the seals.. worked fine under head studs too..
rated for diesel and gear oil and "pressure" systems... presume not lots of pressure..

know what your'e saying Moloko, RR known for quality and all that, but what's good for a roller engine might not be what's best for a flat-4 with head-studs that go thru the water jacket. that said i've sent a e-mail query to Hylomar and Loctite to see if anything in their range of gunk in a tube is suitable for what we need, will put any reply on here.
got ya engine back together now Phil W? how did it go? any probs?

got a reply from Loctite, two poss. products of interest, Loctite ultra copper, silicon based [wonder if this is the stuff you mentioned above, Toomanytoys?] make sure its fully cured and remove excess. other product, Loctite 501,which their tech. man says will cure between two metal surfaces as long as gap isn't over 0.25mm, [shouldn,t think it will be in this case.]
both will, quote; seal against coolant and oils.
Hylomar's reply said, best thing he could recommend is Hylomar Blue, Medium. resistant to oil, coolant & temp.
nice of 'em to reply, i've sent a thanks e-mail to both, hope this helps a few people out. not sure which to go for meself now! spoilt for choice, all shud be loads less than the 35quid VW stuff tho. cheers,
Wasserleaker.
