Fridge wiring???

Hi all

The previous owner of our camper was a bit paranoid about things draining the battery and has disconnected everything! Therefore in the battery compartment behind the drivers seat we just have a bundle of wires! The fridge works when plugged into 240 but doesn't work when running. We also can't work it on gas because the fridge has an electronic ignition, which has been disconnected along with everything else!

Can anyone tell us how to connect the fridge back up so that it works on 12v when the van is running and works the fridge ignition so we can light the gas?

Thanks

You need to tell which van conversion you have, what type of 'fridge is fitted [probably a Dometic RM212] and better still, post some images up so we can see exactly what wiring you have. :)

OK.....
It's a T25 Komet conversion and the fridge is an Electrolux. Not sure of the model without checking.

Will post up some photos of the wiring when I get chance to take some

Not a Komet diagram but the basic circuit should be the same.

I haven't got time at the moment but if you can wait until I have I'll post up all the necessary pictures and locations etc

Cheers Boxy! I think that helps a bit...... from what we can figure out we're missing a relay connector - and I need to find a black & white wire coming from the fridge. :ok

1664 - if you could put up the Komet diagram when you have chance that would be appreciated. :)

I can't add the photographs of the wiring we have because it says the file is too big (even if only add one) and I have no idea how to make them smaller! :?

If you have Windows - open the picture in Paint, select Resize, (try 25% or something similar), then Save the results

Hi, does your komet have a zig unit installed? I have a komet but no control panel. Just have a water meter and 13 amp socket. My fridge is wired through a green zig relay in the starter battery box.

Cheers Neil.

Yes it does have a zig unit but with a control panel on it....

Now you're confusing things again! We were just thinking we needed to connect a relay box thingy to the black wires and it would be sorted - but maybe not.... :?

All I really want is to get the electronic ignition to spark so we can use it on gas and we'll be happy. Cooling while driving on the 12v as well would be nice but could live without that!

Will try putting the pictures in paint and resizing, cheers!

Right, this is the cupboard behind the driver's seat with the shelf removed, You can see the small boxed area with the lightning symbol where the electrics come through from the battery box.

Take the screws out of one side and remove the cover and you will have a similar set up to this.
Image
The red square is the relay that energises with the engine running to run the fridge on 12v whilst driving. The trigger wire runs all the way to the fusebox and is plugged into the vehicle load reduction circuit.
The vehicle blade fuse and holder is for my Propex but since mine was retro fitted you may not have that. You will not have such a large incoming red +ve cable either as I have up graded that.
One of the opaque cylindrical fuses is a spare and the other supplies the fridge 12v.
The leisure feed to the Zig Unit runs behind the cupboards, up inside the driver's side 'C Pillar' and jumps into the cupboard space above the side windows and over the furniture through a small piece of flexible plastic tubing. You can access all the wiring by either removing the Zig, or unscrewing and removing the small shelf over the Zig unit (or both), but you can only access the actual connections with the Zig out. You will need to support it somehow as it is heavy and will stress the cables if just allowed to hang there. Do not remove the Zig with the leisure battery feed fuse in place.
All the leisure wiring is behind there and connected to the outputs of the three Zig fuses; two lighting circuits, water pump, water gauge, old skool 12v socket and fridge electronic ignition (probably Propex too if fitted by Autohomes). I'm working from memory here as I've had a fair old fiddle in there. Picture of Zig still in it's hole but with fascia removed (taken from below)

So, you need to reconnect your FUSED leisure battery feed (assuming you have one under the passenger seat) so your Zig will get 12v and the green LED lights up when you switch the 12v switch on it. You need the split charge relay under the driver's seat connected and FUSED to both leisure battery and starter battery, I suspect once you do all that it will all work unless the previous owner really went to town on it. If he was that paranoid about the electrics is doubtful he'll have jumped in behind the Zig though *cross fingers*.

A cheap electrical multimeter is always handy

P.S The Karisma, Kameo and Komet all have the same wiring so the wiring diagram posted previously should be pretty much as you'll have unless previous owner etc etc

Mine was not fitted with a control unit or leisure battery, which is why I asked the question.. The red and green wires in your hand on the photo, goes to a green "zig" relay on my van, and has two other wires connected to it. One went to earth and I think the other was a switched live feed from the fridge ignition switch.

As 1664 has advised, I started where the zig unit would have been fitted and hand traced or proved continuity wise all the wires running back. The relay did not have an engine running trigger wire, so was live all the time to enable the fridge on gas to be ignited. I found this out as I assumed it was for the 12v operation for the fridge.

Hope this helps

Thanks for all your help guys! I think we've sorted it! :)

The electric ignition had been disconnected on the top of the fridge so we had to pull out the fridge to reconnect that and then it worked on the gas!

We didn't have the relay for the 12 volt wiring but have sorted it now and it seems to be working. We need to give it all a proper test and then tidy up the wiring but it all appears to be working now! :ok
