Hi all

Can a leaking rocker cover gasket run down and make it look like you have a leak from the front camshaft area? Reason I ask is I fitted a new cork rocker cover gasket and it looks like it still leaks from one corner and runs down to this area.

If so is there a better way to fit this or am i better off buying the new type I found on the brickwerks site found here http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php/r ... ubber.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Any help would be appreciated.

Fit it with some rtv like sealant/gasket or fit the newer rubber type. It important not to over tighten the 3 bolts on top.

3 bolts on top? Has 4 on each side, engine is a 1.6 non turbo diesel if that helps.

I prefer the 4 bolt setup if available, still don't over tighten as it easy to bend the shape of the cover. Does yours have the strips under the bolts as this helps keep the pressure even.

Yes have 1 for each side. The cork gasket I used which was new looks like it still allows oil out at one corner near the camgear. I think this is what is causing the engine to look like it has a leak at the crank as its running down and leaving a small puddle when running. Ill but the new rubber type from brickwerks, will i still need to use any sealant?

I believe that they are ideally installed dry, I always have at any rate. Don't compress to much as said, use the correct torque on the bolts if possible

From memory .... (28 years ago in fact) the cam cover seal comes in 3 pieces (cork gasket & two neoprene end seals)
These were/are designed to seal for a couple of years at most...baring in mind that the cam cover needs to come off to check and adjust the tappet shims every main service.
Trouble is.....these tappets rarely get checked nowadays (accepting those that are taken for a proper service at Brickwerks or similar) so the cork goes rock hard and starts to leak.
The head should be using 'shouldered' studs (thread only part way) so the gasket cannot be over tightened, however, we used to knock out any 'pulls' in the cam cover (by putting a piece of flat bar in a vice and using it as a dolly) and then reverse the 'spreader bars' (those strips that go between nuts & cover) so the bar pulls the opposite way.
One of those ALL RUBBER one piece seals, should last longer but straighten out the cam cover (where the studs holes are pulled) at the same time.

Hi I have just fitted the rubber style gasket and studs and it leaks on the corner taken it off and stuck it down with sealant but still weaps a bit might go back to cork even if I have to change it at every service as it they are not expensive.

Well fitted the new rubber seal type and its still leaking at one cornor, going to try some sealant on it tomorrow to see if it helps
