cutting out

Help and advice needed please.
Symptoms:
Glow plug light came on whilst driving. Lost power (cut out). Tried ignition - nothing there. Turned side lights off and tried to restart engine and it started. Kept cutting out during the journey, lost power about 30 seconds after the glow plug light came on. Felt like it had been bump started.
