Clutch problems

I'm find it difficult to change gears. It seems as you need to push the clutch pedal down further to engage the gear. I had the same problem with my beetle as the clutch cable had got slack. Just a few turns of the wing nut on the end of the cable sorted the problem. As my 89 caravelle clutch works off fluid how do I adjust this or is the problem more serious.

Check the system for leaks first, the fluid reservoir is under the plastic cowling covering the speedo etc, just pull off from the back. Check it`s full to the mark. Check around the pedal box for dampness. The main pipe from front to back is metal, so should be OK, then there is a flexi hose from the metal pipe up to the slave cylinder at the gearbox end, check hose for ballooning when you press the pedal ( 2 man job obviously), then look at the slave cylinder for any leaks.
If no leaks found then try bleeding the system, new fluid may just sort the problem out, as old fluid may have air in the system, or the fluid is water contaminated. Fluid should be renewed at a main service anyway, but no-one ever does it, same goes for brake fluid.
