what year is my 1.9dg? and other questions

Hi, first time post.
Been a member for about a year and I find the forums extremely useful for sorting problems on my bus. I have a 1989 1.9df engine bus though while a good lump it is underpowered so I have acquired a 1.9dg engine to replace it. I have started a stripdown and intend over the next few months to rebuild it with lots of shiny new bits and pieces!
Question 1 - how can I find out the year of manufacture of my engine? It only has the blue oil pressure switch under the push rod tubes. The reason I ask is because I need to get a set of 0.25 undersize main bearings and I'm confused as to whether I have one piece or three piece thrust bearing.
Question 2 - on the case where it attaches to the gearbox there is an electrical lead coming from there and at the other end is a three pin socket - what is that? I'm guessing its to do with timing maybe??
Question 3 - how bad can the pitting around the valve seats be before a new head is needed?
Question 4 - what are the electrical connections on the pierburg carb and where do the choke water pipes go?
If you can help I would be eternally grateful

a thrust bearing is in the clutch.
the engine number gives you the manufacture year. (post it up.)

yes it was used in the dealers worshop to find TDC
Question 4 - what are the electrical connections on the pierburg carb
connections are
1. idle speed cutoff (anti dieseling valve)
2. Carb heater (anti icing)
3. choke heater.
There's also an inlet manifold heater
and where do the choke water pipes go?
from the inlet manifold to the auto choke, from the auto choke to the

Single oil pressure switch means its the early dg pre 85
lead is tdc sensor
get a pic up of pitting, when run with head seal failure the aluminium gets eroded
electrical connections on carb are ignition pos for top centre connection (air cut off valve)
thermostat circuit for manufold heater and lower connection on carb(part load duct heater)
Haynes shows choke heater on ther thermostat circuit but on my late van its on the ignition pos circuit
choke water pipes are plumbed into manufold no 9 pn diagram and to y tube no 12 on diagram for a late cooling system

oops sorry. I'll look into membership I promise!!
Thanks for the replies so far.
1) I guessed it was pre 85 but wanted to check...the engine number is DG005922. I realise that there is a thrust bearing in the clutch but what I mean is that on the VW Heritage site for example, the description for the main bearing set includes a reference to thrust bearing here -

2) Ok thanks so it can actually be removed as its not really required for anything
3) I will post some pics tomorrow
4) thanks for the info on the carb - what I really need to know is where the water pipes go. I have one from the right manifold to the choke but not the other from the choke to ?????
Cheers, Sean

You really need a bentley manual if you are doing this
That bearing set is for a late engine it says in description, i think the thrust washers refered to are the ones for the flywheel, confusing as the banner says early, best call to be sure

I described that above,

i assume you have a late cooling system on the df?
get a pic up of the engine bay and we can describe the changes

The thrust washers you are on about are placed either side of the number1 main bearing with their tabs in the recesses, you need to make sure the tabs stay there as you put the case together. The late engine has 3 piece thrust washers (bearing and two full ring thrust washers), the early engine has a one piece thrust washer. (thrusts are part of the bearing its self) . Hope this helps.
