Hi,

I own an 87 Vanagon Westy with the 2.1 MV WBX engine with 4 speed manual. Unfortuantely on my last trip to Devon this year, the engine decided to die on me. I have the chance of buying a 2.1 DJ motor with tinware,ecu ,injection etc.. Bascially everthing from the flywheel back... Can anyone tell me if this will go straight in or am i goint ot run into problems with gearbox, wiring etc? My currnet motor also has aircon fitted which i would like to transfer to the new motor..

Any help would be greatly appreciated ..

The ECU, loom, and ignition parts are specific to the DJ. Otherwise the motors are similar and should swap fine. Air, fuel, and cooling systems are the same. Re. aircon, physically the pump should swap over, just watch for the switch used to tell the ECU about the aircon, not sure which loom this uses. You should't really attempt this swap unless you have the manual...

Yeah but the injection system and ignition are set up for the compression ratio, differ from what it's mapped for and you may run into problems.

The complete injection assembly (pump, lines, regulator, injectors) is the same. The complete air inlet assembly (air filter, afm, throttle body, manifiold, with the exception of a small part under the ISV) is the same.

The only real difference in operation between the DJ and MV is the lower compression ratio, electronic ignition control and lambda feedback system on the MV. The only major bits that really must stay with the DJ block are the ECU/loom/ignition parts.

As Guesty seems to have the whole shebang he should be fine anyway.

Will the new engine run on 95 RON or will i have to use Super Unleaded ?

Not saying this is 100% correct but if you swapped all the MV system (and lambda probe) it should work fine and run at 5 deg BTDC as the ecu would adjust timing and fueling to whatever the lambda feed back told it..

But thats an assumption.. I havent tried it.. but the MV system has more control than the DJ system..

If you install the DJ fi, then you can either time the ignition to 5 deg BTDC and run on 95UL, or time it to 10 deg BTDC and run on 98UL.. but you must not run at 10 deg BTDC on 95.. it WILL cause engine damage..

Si, I must admit I've wondered about this myself. The thing is though, the Digifant ECU has a variable timing map burned-in, with engine rpm along one axis, and a load factor along the other. Whether this map would work OK on the DJ, once the basic timing had been setup, I do not know.

This raises a lot of questions and only Dyno time with the various setups would prove... and who is gonna do that...!!!
I would like to but its a case of setting up several vhicles/setups with before and afters too to validate the results and document it all...

If your MV is a runner I might be interested in taking it off your hands to replace my DG, providing it comes with manifold and all the leccies and injection system, loom, etc...

Mr Dutch : It is a runner , but on the last trip i was getting the buzzer of doom , and then on the way back ,got about 10 miles up the road and it was kicking shed loads of smoke out and lost power.. AA man said it had been overfilled with oil.. I have ran it around the block a few times since and it isnt smoking anymore.. I will probably sell if your still interested..
