Thinking of upgrading my headlights and need to know if it's just a straight bulb swap or are relays involved,what are the best bulbs ?

First thing is to check the headlamp reflectors are not dull they should be a bright mirror finish, not much point in doing anything if the lamps can't shine the light effectively. Then make sure the alternator is working well, if it still has the original 13.8V regulator upgrade to a 14.2V one.

Yup...in order

1) Condition of the lamps (reflectors) & type..an '84' should have H4 lamps (which are important) says H4 on the glass.
2) Cheapest and first mod.....H4 Osram Night Breaker Plus Plus (whatever the latest are) or Philips extreme (again there latest versions as they seem to change/improve every year.
3) Relay mod.....see how things are after doing the above. ^^^^

1.5). Check condition of terminals at earth crowns and lamps and re-make as needed.



E D I T: A brand new Caravelle Carat front harness is only £131.

it would make sense for anyone suffering with low light output from their lamps first to check basic connections after examining reflectors & before undergoing lengthy relay mods...yes 4)

I will add that to my list for the weekend with my delivery from jk today I would say my weekend is sorted

Ok guys I have now checked my headlights no where on the glass does it say H4 and the os reflector is pretty tarnished so I guess it's new lamps ?
where can I get new units from and what are the best units to buy ?

It wouldn't have H4 lamps fitted they where fitted to latter vans, (although low spec vans carried on using the original tungsten lamps).
Only H4 lamps are made as replacements now by Hella the original manufacture, just find the cheapest place for the Hella lamps.
