Dear All,

I just had my van serviced two weeks ago and was a little bit grumpy that it was running really badly afterwards - losing power, overrevving, near stalling. To be fair it had been missing a little and been prone to being cantankerous with it's starting. It got so bad yesterday that after a short trip to the dump I couldn't start her up at all - even after a bump and a jump

Called the AA out and he went through the usual diagnostic process, got a spark, got fuel then homed in on the distributor cap. The rotor arm was missing the metal clip inside that holds it tight and had been bouncing around in the cap and chewed lumps out of it. A new rotor arm and cap has worked wonders today.

In the service they also switched out the temperator sensor for the cooling system as the needle wasn't budging from the left. With the new sensor the needle stays pretty much over to the far right in the 'danger area' and lights up red from time to time when I am travelling at low speeds. Does anyone know what the correct part number should be for this sensor for a 1988 Syncro Doka? I want to check that they fitted the right one.

251 919 501D I would think Green/black 2-pin

the original one should have a part number on it somewhere. Doesn't sound quite right though, was it not just a bad connection

Yes - a 2.1 DJ.

I should have asked for the part but didn't. I am going to ask what part was installed - they must have records as they would have bought it from somebody.

Hi Clive - I'm still having problems with my van. Before I get back to the garage that did the work I want to do my homework. How easy is it to get to the sensor thingy? Where am I going to find it? I am still getting the temp needle hovering over on the right and occasionally tripping the red warning light. Rather disconcertingly the oil warning light is also coming on now even though oil is topped up to the max and still looking clean since last service. Even more alarming is that the red light is accompanied by a loud buzzing coming from somehwere inside the instrument console.

Have I screwed my engine?

could be a problem with electrical connections, the dynamic oil pressure system, or a frelled component rather than frelled engine.
The correct sensor for the guage is 049 919 501 single connection for a syncro £22.37 plus vat from vw - iirc it is shorter than that fitted to 2wd. I have a good used one here. It's easy enough to check wether it is in spec at ambient temp with a ohm meter, and ditto to do some wiring continuity checks before swapping anything or panicing too much.
Take a long look at the wiring diagram and it should make sense, it's a pretty simple system.
Sounds like you've been to some monkeys, hope you paid peanuts.
Buzzer of dooma and red light are saying no oil pressure. Has it had an oiland filter change ? Did they use the correct VW MAN filter or have they slapped in some other piece of rubbish - always insist on genuine parts and paperwork to prove it. Easy enough to check if it's new the numbers will be on it and readable.

Its possible the oil pressure is genuinely low, partic. if that buzzer only sounds when she's fully warned up and/or cornering hard...
Don't overfill whatever, they don't like it.

The LP sensor is under the l/h cyl. head
The HP sensor is deep down at the front (back), right of oil pump, left of oil filler pipe flange, under water pump. Brown wire from switch to yellow wire of connector (push back exhaust pipe cover to remove) says Betley
