AAZ temp gauge

Hi guys. I have an AZZ engine fitted in my van. It was originally air cooled. To cut a very long story short I blew 2 AAZ engines up and I am now having a third one fitted. As you probably know the AZZ engine runs hot. This time I am having an oil cooler from BW fitted. The temp gauge in the van when I blew the last 2 up went from half to max in a matter of seconds so was too late to save the engine. I know you can buy after market add on temp gauges. My question is are they any good, which is the best and do I have it on the water side off the cooling system or the oil? How do you fit them? My money is running out quickly and don't want to blow another engine! :?

Reads like there's a coolant circulation issue.
Did you cut the front to increase the cooling on the rad?
Didya fit the thicker rad?

temps should be taken from around the thermostat

Best place is off the head in the cooling system as standard I would have thought. This is the bit that is the hottest.It would be interesting to see if the cooling system has been done the same as normal seeing as it was Aircooled. I would be inclined to run a NA engine if there are great problems with an AAZ ( I presume that this is what you meant to say - an AZZ is a 6 cylinder petrol engine) engine and its cooling.(which there seems to be.) As you say they run hot even when used on a standard cooling system.

Yea AZZ diesel is what I ment. I have cut a vent in the front. Conversation was done by a VW expert so I suppose the hoses are fitted as they should be. How does the gauge fit onto the head? I have looked in the usual places and have found the gauge for sale but where are the sensors? What do I need to get?

You need to pay attention to the coolant flow direction. Unlike most vehicles, the inlet for the radiator is the bottom fitting, the outlet is the top. You will need to visually follow the coolant pipes to determine that it is correct. My TDI uses a stock WBX radiator and honestly I would like to see it get to temp quicker and run a little warmer than it does even in hot humid Florida. Worth a check.
