Can I use a jump lead as cable for my starter?!?

Evening all
Its looking like I need to replace starter & alternator cables as they are seriously corroded. To avoid splashing out on fresh cable (and in the spirit of reclaimation

) is there any reason why I can't use a spare set of 4m jump leads I have. The cable is thicker and its 500 amps but would it be ok?!!
All comments appreciated

I very much doubt your jumpleads are as thick as the standard dg starter cable which is 35mm2
its not about amps its voltdrop thats the issue and insulation thickness to be safe

That's fair enough Itchy - I've had a quick look and you're right they are slightly thinner (but not far off and I had to ask the question

!).
I'll write the idea off as stupid question of the day

and order the 'real stuff'! Cheers anyway.

Just run it doubled! 1000 A is more than enough. (so long as it is fine stranded flexible cable and not that thick stiff strand stuff that is quite often aluminium)
