gti 2.0 oil leak

hello folks , i have an oil leak between the engine and the bellhousing , how will i know if its the engine seal or gearbox bellhousing seal , its only a small drip but after a while it flicks up onto my rear door when im on the motorway

Whether the oil is coming from the engine or gearbox, you are going to have to split the two to repair it, so you might as well split them to find out. You can repair either with the gearbox out, I think, although someone with detailed knowledge of the engine may be along soon to confirm that.
Gearbox oil smells.............like gearbox oil. Remove the filler plug, sniff it, and you'll always remember that gearbox oil smell.
Engine oil dosn't smell of anything much.
You do have a spigot bearing fitted, don't you????

hello , yes i have a spigot bearing fitted , i split the gearbox from the engine today , it looks like the oil might be coming from the engine as it looked to be behind the plate that sits behind the flywheel , the bell housing was oily but nothing runny , so i will have to keep an eye on it

Whip off the flywheel chap and have a look at crankshaft oil seal, cheap and easy to do.

Better to replace it whilst you have the access - you don't want to have to drop the gearbox again soon.
