Hi All,

I'm looking for a bit of advise :-

I've recently had a recon engine that a mate supplied - I upgraded my old 1.7d KY to a 1.9d 1Y ( I think ?)
All went well until one day the oil light came on - I immediately shut it off and coasted to a lay by.

On inspection of the engine the bracket holding the brake vacuum unit had worked loose and the vacuum unit was resting on the top of the engine. It had popped out of the oil pump hole !
The AA called out and fortunately I had only lost the bolt - the bracket was sat on top of the engine.

Everything was put back with a new bolt and the engine started up ok with the oil light going out pretty quickly.
Happy Days ( so I thought ! )
I drove it for a few miles and the engine started knocking big style, but not regular - sort of intermittently ?

I know it's difficult to diagnose what the problem could be without listening to it, but could anyone try to guide me to help figure out where to start looking with the engine in situ - big end bearings, oil pump etc - I'm surprised that it could be damaged so easily ( if it is)
I want to try and fix it as cheaply as possible, but I feel deep down that the engine may be goosed !

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I presume you know or were told that the vac pump shaft is responsible for driving the oil.pump.
So how long did the engine run and under what power with the oil light on?
That's No. 1
What is this knocking... have you had a diesel mechanic listen?
Any idea what the oil.pressure is.
If it's the big ends can drop sump inspect

Hi,

It ran for about 5 mins at about 50 mph with the oil light on , but most of it I dipped the clutch and dropped the revs and tried to coast to the nearest lay by.

My mate listened to it and reckons it's an odd noise and not a continuous knocking like the big ends ?

I guess if I drop the sump, I can inspect the big ends and crankshaft by undoing each con rod ?

I've taken the sump off and inspected the crankshaft, bearings and journals and so far it all looks ok down the bottom end ?? No play to to the crankshaft fore and aft and the con rod journals seem ok too

There quite a few bits of metal swarf in the oil pump pick up, and I'm just wondering if the pump itself may be at fault ? How do I check that the pump is working correctly -
I'm inclined to try a new pump in - clean it all out put fresh oil in and give it a blast.

What's normally the first thing to wear when oil starvation occurs ?

My KY died as a result of almost the exact same scenario happening. Engine continued to run eventually but had a strange knocking. Took us up to Tiree for a week, but was never right. Might have ran for a good while after but we ended up putting a 1Y in. If it ran dry of oil for more than a few seconds, it's going to have done quite bit of damage as the whole thing would be running dry, but the sump would still have oil in it. So, big ends might have been okay, but anything above it probably all worn.

Don't mean to be the bearer of bad news, but running with no pump is never good news.
