Hello everyone, thought i would pass on a useful nugget that many of you probably already know but has just helped me get some cheap used tyres. The standard 185 / 14 tyre is quite an unusual size according to my local tyre guy in commercial tyres, pre W reg transits have this tyre size. Using this just got three used but almost new transit tyres on (transit) rims for £10 each from gumtree here in newcastle, and the ad just said ' transit tyres '. Saved me a fair wad of cash anway!

Hmmm, the spell checker turned transit into transhit. Conspiracy?

Yes cheap tyres sound good but what are the date codes?

Not unusual to have very old tyres that still look fine with loads of tread but potentially dangerous
anything over 10 years should be changed imo, reccomendation is 6 years

just changed my spare that was 1997

you can still buy these plenty for sale its just that you have to pre order as tyre fitters dont hold them on the shelf anymore

Shifting from 14" to 15" rims is best move as it saves money on tyres. More of them available so competition more fierce. I did that four years ago - best modification I ever made but I stuck to steelies. Last set of tyres cost me £40 (bloke was just upgrading) and next set (now in my lockup) cost £120 for four brand new Michelins. Go up a size and buy ahead and you can cut the price of tyres enormously. As soon as I'm shod, I look for the next set. Never paid £100 a tyre thats for bloomin sure

Speedo is now bang on and gears feel right on bigger wheels. I always think 14" tyres look too small in the arches.

Tyres are cheap. Even £100 per tyre is cheap. Let's say £400-worth lasts 20,000 miles. That's 2p per mile. How much has fuel cost you for that?

Maybe if they're 20" tyres but certainly not when it comes to 14" tyres!
The most expensive 185R14C's(Michelin Agilis) are only £69....budget Nankangs are only £45 with Goodyear Cargos in the middle at £52!

Certainly not an unusual size, plenty of commercials use them. The post office use them by the thousands.
Even Wiltshire made Avons are only £50

No, I wasn't necessarily thinking 185 14C for that...
