Hi all,
Opened up my engine bay yesterday to do some regular mantenance and noticed everything in the engine bay was covered with a fine layer of black soot type stuff.
Anyone come across this, we're away in the van this wknd, do I need to get it checked by someone?!
Cheers
Tim

I am no Diesel expert, but as no-one else has popped in yet, I will have a stab.
Dry(ish) sooty - do you have any exhaust leaks ?
Is your turbo blow off valve (on the exhaust manifold) working correctly / not leaking ?

Hi,
Yeah it's a kinda dry soot. I think it must be an exhaust leak somewhere, but I did try blocking the pipe to see if it was blowing out somewhere obvious, but couldn't see anything obvious.
My only other thought was if it was maybe dust from a wearing belt (alternator or timing) but it seems more oily and messy than rubber dust.
What is the best way to check if the turbo blow off valve is working correctly? Is it possible to do with one person?
Cheers
Tim
