problem with gear changes in my 2.1 1987 camper

hi all, can any one shed some light on why my 2.1 automatic camper seems to struggle going up hill, its almosts as if the load is too much for it.
A brief history, had problems with starting, changed virtually everything with the ignition system, got the camper to start, also had a problem with it sitting at idle and it cutting out, that is sorted. it drove no problems for a little while, now it struggles going along with gearchanges, it seems to almost stall when going along, we could be driving along at 40-50 mile an hour come to a hill even with the accelerator down it struggles to keep the speed up, when it decides it needs to go up or down a gear it seems to pause, if I keep the pedal down the likely hood it would stall, Anyone got any ideas please call me 07919448159, I might be able to describe symptom better.
