-40mm is about as much as you want IMHO for an everyday useable `van. Some pics of mine on the Brickyard with 40mm drop, but wheels are different. You`re right in what you are saying about going down the alloy route, it`s all the added extras that make it expensive, longer studs for the back, stud conversion on the front, new chrome nuts, locking nuts all round etc. You can easily add on another £60 or £70 for that lot, plus spacers at £20 a pair.
Other option is some standard VW OE Carat type alloys that fit straight on with no hassle, but they fetch good money, some on Ebay.

My Westy is lowered 40mm on standard rims, the fat tyres fill the arches nicely. Haven't got any pics here, but can post some later it you want?

I would like to see a set of Banded widened steel wheels with big rubber for a change. Most 4wd places do that quite cheaply or know somewhere to get it. Maybe my next project..

The Carat wheel will fit straight on a standard `van, no need for any long studs, spacers etc. just plug and play

Pity you didn`t mention it earlier, I sold a nice set of 4 the other day with mint tyres

Just a quick note.
OE VW wheels do not bolt straight on, for some reason VW deemed fit to use taper seats on the wheel fittings rather than the radiused seat as used on everything else VW.
If you are buying OE wheels make sure they come with the correct wheel nuts/bolts.
If you don't get them, I can supply something that will do.
