Gearbox shot

Hi, travelling with the family in France at the moment driving a 1985 and just been told our gearbox is shot and we need to replace it - garage just starting to look to try to source a used box but just wondering if anyone on the forum knew anything about the French VW scene and useful sources to look for parts? We're currently stuck on a campsite close to Nantes - also, are there other models of car or van that would have a compatible gearbox? We just got a new engine and clutch fitted and other work done and just passed the DOE before we left home and were not expecting this, any suggestions/advice would be much appreciated

i seem to remember there's a 80 -90 member near la rochelle i think, never met him tho'.

dandaz is 230km south of ya, dunno if he can source a gbox for you.

tetley sid near cognac used to be pretty active here and is a very competent fixer of all broke things but he hasn't posted for yonks.

you might mention what engine you have as an indication of what box will be suitable.

(E D I T, i just noticed it's a 1.9 diesel.)

i have a 1600 Aircooled T25 one here with only 80,000km but that's no help to ye.

bon chance.

I wouldn't call him on a Sunday but if I had some contacts to start trying to line something up tomorrow it would be a big help, I don't think the garage would have the same range of contacts as this forum, that's the worry I have at the moment

Sorry, engine type 1.9D (1Y), none turbo, from a golf - can anyone suggest a compromise gearbox, something from another make/model that could fit?

Looking for a mechanic who can handle a clutch replacement and/or gearbox work on a T25 in the Nantes/vandee region in France, kinda stuck here, any suggestions appreciated, many thanks

google is your friend and the results you will get in France will be different to those we get here - there is a big VW dealer in Nantes so I'd start there go and find the friendliest person there and ask if they know of a local garage that would do good work on your vehicle, the same place they would send a local customer who didn't want to pay euro100/hour with them to work on such an old vehicle, they will probably be able to signpost you in the right direction

Many thanks Aidan, the mechanic I dropped it to earlier thinks he can fix it, he doesn't believe it's the spigot bearing but rather a damaged joint, (maybe true meaning lost in translation :), which has resulted in a large loss of oil from gearbox, he doesn't think box or clutch is damaged but needs to order part and drop the box to fix damage - he did drive it for a good while and didn't seem too concerned, I drove it earlier and apart from difficulty getting into 3rd gear a couple of times it drove and sounded alot better than it did before weekend - Jean Claude from syncro club came back with some very useful contacts which gives me a great backup if this garage doesn't work out - I'll post once I know more, very grateful for all the help from everyone - regards
