Adjusting Tappets

Hi All
I currently have my engine (2L Aircooled) out of the van for some TLC. I've replaced the pushrod seals and would like to adjust the tappets.
A couple of questions:
As my engine is on a bench in the garage, can they be adjusted with a cold engine? I've read elsewhere the engine needs to be warmed up.
Can I find TDC by removing no 1 spark plug and looking through the hole and watching when the piston reaches it's peak?
