Turbo question

After reading on here the various posts that have concluded with a failed or failing turbo diagnosis, I've decided I have a similar problem (oil in the exhaust, in the intake ... pretty much all over the shop really). So I can buy a new turbo, get mine reconditioned, recondition it myself, or get a turbo from a scrapped car and hope for an improvement.

I think the scrapper might be a first port of call, just because it's cheap (£35), and because I might get lucky. At my local wrecker's yard there are numerous VW/Audi/Seat cars, quite a few with the 1.9TDI motor. The turbos look similar to the one I have, but also different (I'm using the turbo that came on my JX, although the van actually runs on an AAZ currently).

My question is, are all the turbos spanning a number of years (say, 1987-97) interchangeable? Does the turbo attached to 9say) a 1995 Seat Ibiza 1.9TDI have the right flanges and actuators etc to go straight on to the AAZ? I realise that I would have to reindex the oil return, and maybe have to use a hammer on the engine mount to get it to fit correctly - but is the part essentially the right one, or should I go straight to the recondition/replace option?

Consider fitting a CHRA central rotating hub assembly this is the centre part that leaks oil with the shaft and both turbines attached
Just (?) use your existing parts and it will be like a new turbo at half the price. I bought mine from a German turbo specialist cost approx 200 euros plus carriage it came BALANCED with certificate fixing screws gasket and even special oil to lubricate it for first start up.

CHRA are available elsewhere but I found this the cheapest and only took 3 days to come

there are several "levels" of repair kit but I chose to have the complete balanced unit so no hassle with assembly

I photographed the job if you need it but I think the site will answer your questions

To answer qu. about type of turbo.
Tdi turbos not the right ones
For a JX or AAZ you need a Garret T2 or equiv. KKK K14 but they must have the VW 4 bolt manifold and nominally the right A:R ratios (turbine and compressor impeller casing.

All depends on what exh manifold is fitted.
If you have the 50 degree slanted JX install you prob. Have the 4 bolt rectangular port JX nanifold.

That's right, I have the 50deg installation - AAZ now used to be JX but using the JX intake and exhaust manifolds. Didn't realise there was also a Garret turbo for these, thought the Borg Warner (KKK) were the only ones.

Might find Garrets on some Seat Ibizas. I like them as easier to adjust indexing & have remote wastegate vacuum unit.

Borg Warner ones were Schweizer Swiss originally?
Integrated wastegate and generally smaller more fussy screws and bolts.
Less easy to refurb although as we know, its the shaft balance that is impossible to do at home.
