1.6td head bolt question

Hopefully Simon Baxter can answer this .Can you tell me the torque for the streech bolts .I was reading a 1.9 diesel peter russek manual that said 29 pounds for each .Is this the same for a 1.6td?

i know this sounds daft but 99% of vw head bolt torques are
40nm
60nm
+90 degrees
+90 degrees
petrol or diesel
( nm =newton meters)

1) 30 ft/lb
2) 44 ft/lb
3) 55 ft/lb
4) then a further 180 degrees each bolt ( 2 x 90 degree turns each is OK)
5) run engine until the fan has cut in
6) stop engine, then tighten another 90 degrees
7) after 1000 miles, tighten them another 90 degrees (hot or cold)

Use new bolts as well.

Method taken from the Bentley manual, I wonder if anyone does this sequence ? :shock:

i dont do the retorque after engine run or 1000 miles, i have had bolts sheer and once i had the threds pullout of a block, NEVER had any probs with 40-60 nm +90+90, just my experience :?
always and with out fail use new bolts :wink: [/quote]

I do them that way, 40Nm, 60Nm, 90*, 90* run till fan cuts in, another 90* then run for 750-1000 miles then another 90*.

Not had a problem, always use new bolts, clean the threaded holes out with solvent and compressed air.

You have to do the final 2 stretches otherwise you can get head chatter.

Due to the high compression ratio of a Diesel engine (around 23 to 1 on a VW IDI) then if the head is not tight enough it can be lifted, usually putting oil into the water and giving head gasket problem type symptoms. This is caused by either not replacing the head bolts with new items or not carrying out the full tightening preocedure.
