Have any of you bought or used one of the above ice boxes?
There is a price difference between the two but wondered if you do indeed 'get what you pay for' ?

FYI this purchase is because I am buying a new fridge also. My patience with the RM183 has finally left me!

I've an Icey -tek 55l very happy with it, not cheap but great build quality

in use

I would also consider the coleman xtreme, a lot cheaper and the performance is very close to those two.

How do you keep the contents of the Icey Tek cold? Ice Blocks or just ice and how long will it keep cold?

I use icey tek blocks, 4 day festival = cold beer

Thanks Trucker, you can never put a price on cold beer!!
I might go for the Coleman. Less than half price of the Icey Tek and great reviews on Amazon.

Coleman claim 5 days, I have managed four by making sure everything is well chilled when it goes in and then filling the gaps with ice cubes. Don't open the drain plug as the melted water still helps keep things cool.

Thanks thechubbsdubs. I didn't realise that the Coleman was so big, could probably use it as a desk/seat!!

They do a range of sizes, I think mine is 36ltr.

The Coleman Tri Colour Xtreme's are the best looking of the all plastic Coleman's.

However, personally I was not happy at all with the overall appearance of any of the boxes on sale....they haven't got the 'image' I was looking for. Then I found this beauty:




It may not have the ultimate performance of the boxes mentioned but has still delivered cold beers after an extended 4 day summer camping weekend.

And....it looks the part next to my camper.

no martin you need a nice red one... like the one i got.. keeps beers cold and its a spare seat or table cheers mate well happy with it plus like you and put stickers on it cheers simon

Seems the usual choice is either a 'ultra modern' plastic box or something with a bit of retro 'soul'.
However, the ultra 'coolness' of old CocaCola & Pepsi boxes makes them far too much of a Split/Bay Cliché and really too early to be compatible with a wedge...the Steel Belted Colemans definitely hit the mark as they look just right.

I do like the silver one....mmmm.
I have not yet purchased a cooler as I (eventually) managed to resurrect my RM184 on gas. The good lady wife was also not keen on another box.
Met with Scottbot at Busfest and he had a Coleman extreme. It was huge. Had wheels if I remember. Might wait until the start of the camping season next year and see what my options are.

Oh and I agree with Martin that the Coke type cool boxes are far to old for our types of vans. Lets leave those to the others!

I bought an Icey Tech this summer and sold it straight away as I wasn't impressed, it wasn't much better than a good quality coolbox. When I used to camp in a tent I had an igloo extreme which is pretty much the same as the Coleman and in my experience it performed better than the Icey tech. The waeco cf40 I've just bought to replace my useless us spec fridge is amazing. A bu**er on the leisure battery though

Follow basic rules and a 'Passive' non powered cooler can work very well up to around 3 days. But those who think you can bung 20 cans of warm Fosters in one with a few ice packs expecting the beer to be cool on camp are always going to be disappointed.

All your beer/wine/milk/salad/bacon etc needs to come directly out of the fridge or freezer and straight into the cooler box.
Use as many ice packs as you can 10 - 20 is good.
Don't put warm stuff in there on camp expecting it to cool.
Lift the lid as few times as you can, for as less time as you can.
Don't allow the cooler to sit in direct sunlight.
