Apologies as I haven't my Haynes to hand and couldn't find out anything in google or wiki. But wanting to change my gaskets and thought would double check that you don't need to drain oil first? Or do you?

No you dont need to drain the oil, but I normally jack up the side of the vehicle that I am removing the cover from as some oil tends to remain under the covers and tends to dribble on the exhaust or floor so something to catch that with would also help

And don't use any gasket "goo" of any sort. Just a light smear of grease to hold them in place whilst you get the covers back on. Many folk advise fitting new cover clips (they are cheap) as the old ones sometimes lose their tension and don't press hard enough onto the cover. I have got away without changing them over a few "re-uses" :). I mention this in case you still get any drips after changing them.
