Foam lining for the Rear Flap

Each time I checked the engine oil level I was looking at the scraggy remnants of the original plastic foam meant to seal the rear flap.
Now I've fitted this 10mmm thick black neoprene sponge sheet which seems just right for the application.

It's not an original VW part, but promises to be more durable.
For me it looks good, and complements the otherwise 'as new' rear of the vehicle.

....and perfect for those moments when you feel a desperate need to check oil and water levels during the night without waking everyone up.
Nice mod.

OK. Here's a rear view of the vehicle posing on the approach to Hawes. There's lots of 1st gear work here.

it was fitted to some of the last vans along with other sound deadening, like the thick foam at the bottom of the D pillars and at the bottom of the A pillars.

Being made in 1982, the van is towards the last of the air cooled .
In those places where the original foam had decayed away, it was clear to see that road spray had been sucked into the engine bay through this aperture. I'm hoping the replacement foam will prevent this.
