Just finished my petrol to diesel conversion at last, goes great but overheats when driven. Tried bleeding several times. The water that comes out of the bleed screw is always stone cold for some reason though ? also radiator never heats up. have flushed / back flushed it. Both pipes at the back are hot, although one of them only heats up after i squash and play about with them for a bit. Any ideas greatly appreciated as im desperate to get using me camper again. Thanks

I have a 1.6td which has had overheating problems. There are checks to be made for hose connections if water leaks out air will get in.Thermostat and hose connection housing .Expansion tank cap may be faulty. The diesel engine that replaced the petrol do you no its historyDid you see it running and not overheating in the other vehicle. It may have had this problem .Then it could be a cylinder head or gasket problem.

definetely no leaks engine rebuilt not too long ago. think i will take thermostat out tomorow and see what hapens, start with the easiest thing first. its just the fact that no hot water comes out of bleed screw on rad that makes me think of air or blockage somewhere ?

Thermostat could be stuck shut? Remove it completely and see if you get a warm rad then.

yeah, i was thinking along the same lines westy, that will be my first port of call in the morning, heres hoping thats all it is, miss my weekend trips away! other than the overheating it goes really well and engine sounds sweet! should be a good bit cheaper to run around the hills than the 1.9 petrol was

I have the same problem with my 1.6D Westy.

I took the thermostat out and checked it - worked fine.

Re assembled without it and the radiator warms up and van doesn't overheat.

Still haven't found the reason as I have a new van which I now use. Still have to sort it though....

Someone else, I think it was Camper was having the same problems, I don't know if he fixed it?

Well, i done just that, took out the t/stat, put it all back together went for a drive and its just what i was hoping for! rad heats up, no overheating not much in the way of heaters but i can live with that just now. For others information, the t/stat was a Thompson one which i hav read to be troublesome .I'll get a vw one and see what happens then. Many thanx guys
