Without the risk of appearing really thick would I be right in thinking the two dots on the dipstick are the markers and not the bends ?

Of course I knew the answer...Im not really that stupid

Better to ask than ruin an engine. I think the bends are to stop it rattling in the tube and also prevent wiping off of the oil as you withdraw it.

for the record I have been using these markers I was just double checking.

Oh your bad bastards, good question well asked with pictures! YES assuming your engine is standard the welded dots are the high and low marks.
