been for little drive in the van its a 1980 devon, 2.0l Aircooled 4 speed. the gears just feel sloppy and pop out sometimes whilst parking up, slow speeds in forward and reverse.
is there any wear parts that might need changing adjusting? any help would be awesome

thankyou in advance

Have a look at John's excellent post here:

https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... &p=7938014" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

and this might be useful too:

Let me know if you need more pointers, because I've had the whole early system apart recently, so could give you some idea of what wears and how best to fix it.

Cheers,

James

So is something worn on there do you think James? I've changed all the bushes bar the rugby ball one and that felt ok?

I'm a bit confused, gypo, because my original reply to the OP (dub1670) was to do with problems they were having with a very early van. I see that you have started another thread about trouble you are having with your 1985 gear linkage, but that is a very different set-up, and very well covered in the Wiki. My links were relevant to the 1980 linkage that the OP was asking about, but not really to yours. Sorry I can't help more with your problems, but this thread is about something a bit different.

Cheers,

James

Ok thanks all the same though James.
Would anyone know if there is any adjustment on the front end at the gear stick socket from in the cab where you see the bolts on the top? Do they have to be in a specific place?
Cheers

Not really, or not enough to make any difference. You need to get underneath, follow the linkage and find where the wear is - if its actually in the linkage.

The gears are nice and tight it's just like the stick goes over half inch to far if you push it.
Looks like I replies to the wrong thread, sorry to hijack it :D

If it was for eg just one spline out where you split it could that cause the problem?
I'm pretty sure it not though.

It might help if you get an assistant and they work the gears whilst you lay underneath and see exactly whats going. Often, doing that quickly pinpoints the problem.

I would think (been a long time since I worked on an Aircooled), that the following animation still holds true in your case though. This is underneath behind the front gearchange, looking towards the front. Animation is 4-speed WBX but should be similar to yours:

Also, this might help you decide what needs looking at. Do make sure everything is tight - particularly the mechanism at the gearbox: http://www.van-cafe.com/home/van/page_1 ... ifter.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
