Does anyone have a picture or a diagram of the original shielding that surrounded the bottom of the diesel engines.
You know, that tin that has some thick sound-deading material attached that goes around the engine.
Mine is kinda beat up and I might be missing pieces and I would like to repair or fabricate some replacement parts.

Is this for one of the syncros? As they are different to the 2wd shields... There is also 2 different types of syncro diesel shields. Depending on whether you have the large or smaller bashplate

Yeah, it's for the Syncro Tristar. Originally a 1.6TD JX, now a 1.9TD AAZ, with full bash guard.

Thanks for the links Lloydy. I've definitely have the second system with the heavier sound deadening material. Yep, as I thought I'm missing some of the smaller pieces.
Interesting that there seems to have been a sound mat under the engine/on top of the bash guard. Those pieces must get soaked with oil and then discarded.
I spent a couple hours cleaning off the old oil and grime from the bash guard and rails. Hope to keep it in better condition and maybe replace the missing sound deadening material with something.

My Syncro Tristar also came with sound mats the surround the upper engine compartment, I've got replacement material coming from a marine supplier for that.

In the syncro section, look at my thread 'getting there' I've just posted pictures of most of the tinware, basically all the smaller pieces. The two bigger pieces are fitted to my van at the moment. Hopefully you will be able to tell what's missing.. (Just click in the last page)
Very interested in what sound deadening you have around the upper engine compartment, do you have any pics?

Ok, here are some photos of the engine sound deadening in the Syncro Tristar:

This is the foam covered hardboard that fits around the upper engine compartment. You can see the pegs it attaches to sticking out along the side spar.(right along the shadow line) It helps cut down on diesel noise and separates air from the engine bay and the engine fresh air intake.
There is also some of the same kind of heavy insulation that is in the bottom tin along the backside of the bulkhead.

Here are the four main pieces of tin that I have. Parts number 1, 2, 5, and 7 in the VagCat diagram. I do also have part number 3 still attached to the body. I'm missing the other bits.

All this tin is getting beat back into shape and painted. The insulation has also gotten washed. Loads of silt and oil came out!
I wonder where we might get something similar to replace/upgrade this stuff?

Also, any idea if the insulation clips/holders are still available? Part number 8.

as far as i know you can still get the clips from vw, i know brickwerks stock them.

i have the following parts 1, 3a, 3b, 5, 6,
i dont have 2, 3, 5a, 7a.
but i wonder if 3a+b replace 2 &3 on different models? maybe doka-caravelle?
No idea where 5a or 7a go
saying that the piece in your pic at the front (large with 3 holes next to each other) looks nothing like anything i have.

The large piece with the three holes is part #5 in VagCat.

Where do 3a & 3b go? looks like around the exhaust pipe?
#3 attaches just below the junction box. I forget how #2 attaches, but here's a photo when it was still in place.

Yep, your bits look different than mine. Mine are for 1989 Syncro JX turbo. Was yours a turbo diesel?

#7 is the same as #6 except there is a pocket at the rear. Maybe because mine had factory Webasto coolant heater in right rear corner.

No idea about 5a or 7a It's too bad that VagCat does not have better diagrams. Oh well, what they do have is better than nothing!

I just saw that Brickwerks has those clips and also some of the insulation mats. Too bad we here in North America can't buy from Simon.

mine was a 1990 jx (multivan)
my number 5 is the same as the top right part in the pic i posted above.
still dont think there is anywhere for no3 to fit on mine? not with the a-b anyway
as for 3a-b. i have never ever tried to fit them. I had oil coolers and chargecooler pipework running front to back, so the smaller pieces of tin never fitted. All that has gone now, so they will be refitted. will be fun trying to work it out!
the sound deadening on brickwerks is for the 2wd, so wont fit the syncro panels
