HI, I have a a 1990 T25 2.1 injection, It runs like a dream on the open road, but as soon as you hit traffic in the city and have to stop and start, the engine revs uncontrollably and it gets very hot, has any one experienced this? if so what was the fault?

search stabilisation........ and clean and remake connections and earths..........every one in the engine bay to be sure, while your scrubbing everything bright and shinny check the condition of the wiring loom, spend no money on bits only on contact cleaner and elbow grease............. what you'll find during your search is that most of the big items (ecu, icu, afm temp2 etc) in the injection system can cause it and they all have a wire connected to em

Could it be as simple as the return spring needing replaced with a stronger one, when it is revving high all I need to do is give the spring a little pull and it returns to normal, I have had the whole throttle mechanism off thinking the butterfly valve would need cleaned,so every thing is lubricated and clean, but still when I let it idle until it is hot enough for the fan to come on, it won`t return to low revs without giving the spring a little pull.

I looked at that first, thinking that would be the obvious place to start, looks fine, also if it was the cable, why does it only happen when the engine is hot?

As I have been working on it all day, and just found that out, I thought I had it fixed, put all my tools away, and gave it one more rev up before putting the lid on, away it went again, so I thrashed it up the road (frustration), as soon as I had it on the open road it went back to normal. It woudn`t matter so much if it was me that was driving it, but as it is a hire van it will have to be right. the last person drove through the centre of Edinburgh when one direction were playing and just about blew it up, it was so hot the oil light came on so she put more in when it didn't need it ( the life of a hire company)

I've had this just twice in 5 years, never got to the bottom of it!

Did it settle down, or are you having to live with it?

As I say, it has only happened twice (for about 10 minutes each time), when the weather was hot, so settled down.
