Yes the numbers are on the box.Cant help with the golf/polo question though.I do know the 2.1 and the 1.9 have different gear ratios. But both will fit.

I don't see why not, audi auto boxes of the same era as our vans are the same.

I think you are forgetting a vital fact Rob.....and I can't believe it's taken while now for me to point it out...

There's no such thing as a rear engined automatic Audi! :D

Even if...and I mean if...an automatic gearbox from another VW or Audi fitted a T3 it would have more reverse gears than forward gears............

Of course your right Steve.I never thought about the engine placement.I was going off the info I was given when I was after an autobox.I stand corrected.

the autobox as we know it in a T3 is a combined gearbox and transaxle, ie it also provides drive to the wheels
the 010 auto gearbox part is the bit at the front of our box and is also used in different forms in the audi100/200 and Porsche 944, which are front engined rear wheel drive vehicles - as a result the crown and pinion in the T3 auto transaxle is a very wierd and wonderful thing driving the oposite side of the crown wheel to normal because the output from the auto transmission is running the opposite direction to ours. It is possible to use the auto part from one of the other iterations of 010 box and mate it to the transaxle part of ours but it's not straightforward and the availability of parts for the 010 box is very poor, Porsche have a better stock than VWAudi but they are Porsche price.
Because noone has found and reported back on a good rebuilder for the T3 auto transmission (that I know of) then the options seem to be stick in a used box or find your local auto transmission place and see if they can fix it or go manual
The boxes are pretty robust but maintenace is everything and corrosion of the pressed steel parts of the case and ingress of water are an issue
If I had an auto I'd be changing the fluids very regularly, but even getting the gaskets and seals to be able to do that isn't straightforward, and I'd buy myself a spare box any oprotunity I had
It is unlikely than anyone will ever remanufacture parts for the 010 transmission other than Porsche, VWAudi won't be interested in a transmission they made 30 years ago and which was an expensive option in vehicles that mostly have been crushed and melted down - when did you last see a 200 ?
Check out on the Samba, the yanks had alot more autos than we did, how are they faring with keeping them running
VW Classic Parts did have some new ones left last time I checked last year, weren't cheap but they would be right and warranted, depends I guess if you want to keep driving the van for years or just long enough to sell it on

Thanks for your indepth reply ,as with most vw owners im too deep in the hole financially to stop now and i do enjoy the driveability of my van so as i have a spare gearbox needing the reverse gearing looking at i will spend tomorrow finding the quickest place to get it fixed and ordering the oil cooler replacement part from america to make sure it dont happen again.untill its done we have no transport as its our everyday run around too so i need it to be reliable for the long term.

Cogbox did my auto box rebuild. He also fitted a new Peloquin Torque Biased Diff from GoWesty. Pretty pleased with the job. As far as I know he sends parts of it abroad for calibration. It's lovely and smooth reckon it will do another 34 years.
