Crunchy 3rd gear

Hi there, every time i change into 3rd it crunches, I've had a new clutch put in and replaced to ball and cup joint at the back.
I called out my friend who is a mechanic but not a gearbox or VW specialist and he think's I need a new gearbox, so I was just wondering if there might be anything else worth trying before sticking it in a garage and also dose anyone know of a specialist's or good garage's in the cheshire area?

Thanks a bunch,

Dan.

Hello Mate, try Aidan Talbot, he uses this forum and also has a website, he's a T3 gearbox specialist. Possibly in North Wales, but i don't quite remember!

Common fault on 5 speed boxes, I had one like it. As above Aidan is the guy who knows.

You should also try checking the level of oil and draining refilling with the correct grade. Think I used Comma SX75W-90 GL-4 Semi-Synth.

Draining will give you the chance to see how much swarf is in your box.
