How many of you run the old Exhaust Setup ['J' tubes one down the left, one down the right of the engine]
But dont have the support brackets fitted ?? Seems pretty common that a lot of vans have the silencer supported only by the bolts to the head ?
This cant be good .....

Can It ???

No answer from me.
BUT - I did see one that had the usual set-up with regard to the pipes, but had an aftermarket silencer fitted.
The silencer was bolted to rigid brackets on the chassis side of the rear engine mounting.
Meaning the silencer was rock solid onto the chassis, but of course the pipes from the motor are rocking about with the engine !!
It must have only just been fitted, cause I doubt it would stay in one piece for very long !!

mmmm not good, twiddly engine pipes + solid silencer !!
Bad Karma That !!!!!!!!!!!!
Have seen the supposed brackets in Haynes.. but what do they bolt to ...
and im assuming everyone else here has the later setup with the spidery pipes ???????

I've got the early set up with the brackets, wouldn't like to run without it, exhaust leaking at is is....
Brackets bolt to bottom of crankcase and run up at 45degress is to the silencer. Reckon it would be easy enough to fabricate some from a bit of angle iron, cheaper than upgrading zorst to the later one.

My van when first bought was with the old (cheaper more useless system) and all the bracketery for the proper system had been junked.
This thing rotted and had to be replaced.
Now then having spent over £250 on the correct system with increased BHP the darn thing was going on!!
it was found after fitting, that the big exhaust box was unsupported and various bracketery had to be bought to do this ....however thanks to shepsters brains ...my own...and some head scratching, it was fixed with some copper strapping and a couple of bolts.
Basically the exhaust has to be able to shake/vibrate or move with the engine..so fixing it to itself was the way to go

Skell, where do the brackets bolt to exactly? is it the same place as the 'tinware' which protects the pushrod tubes and where on the silencer do they bolt to.
Cheers.

Yep the brakets go from the bottom mounts on the silencer to the lower mounts of the pushrod protection tin..
I have an early system on my velle.. no brackets and it has broke a stud twice.. need to use good quality "8.8" high tensile bolts/studding and not do them up too tight..
Power loss? no different as far as I could tell.. but apparently some silencers are worse than others..

or a stone was to get kicked up at the pushrod tubes at 50mph and make a hole so all the oil drains out and siezes your engine .. not important at all

phone CJ or one of the other breakers they will have a set for you
the 2.1 i'm rebuilding at the mo had a couple of tubes that were dented , how they got like that i can only guess at stone chips ..
the covers get taken off when new exhausts get put on and sometime never replaced ,bit like the rest of the WBX tin ware

as I said earlier

you can secure the box easily with a metal strap and a couple of bolts ...I'll post a pic up tomorrow
