Gear box? Clutch?

So, this morning I had to call the AA out before I could come home from camping. Starter battery completely dead... would not jump start off another motor. Job done, great service etc etc.

Then, about 10 miles into my journey (Bakewell to Ellesmere, North Shropshire) I could no longer select third or fourth gear (nor as I discovered when I eventually got home, reverse). First and second gear are fine, and if I tried to change into third with revs still on it did go in and drove perfectly well, just didn't want to come out again.

In my other motors clutches "going" were always a gradual thing and you could tell over a period of time it needed doing. This was pretty much instant which is why I'm worrying it might be the gearbox. Any thoughts - could it be either gearbox or clutch or is it more likely to be one than the other? Cheers.

It is a 1.9 DG Syncro.....

Cheers

Or simply the nylon ball at the base of the gear stick has collapsed. If its that, the replacement kit is available.

Thanks Ralf, the stick does have a lot of play in it....

And can be made worse by a loose ball/socket at selector end too.

My pleasure. Your clear explanation helped point to what is the most likely problem.

More and more vans will have this problem as these parts wear out, if the parts have not already been replaced. Mine collapsed just as I parked at home. I was lucky. If it's not just that part that needs fixing, it's the cheapest fix and at least you know that part is sorted out. Good luck and let us know the result!
:ok

I really need some help here.....

The garage have replaced the front linkage using the kit linked to above... I had to take it away this weekend so was able to see what is still wrong with it.

I can now select gears and it runs fine when in them. However, it is VERY difficult to get into fourth... when stopped it is hard to get into first - third happens more often. The stick still has lots of play in it.

The mechanic says he needs it back to finish off by fixing the rear section on the linkage however, I can't find a kit for this... is it a case of buying individual parts? Does anybody know what parts I might need for this?

Thanks
