Hi James
you can start by telling us what van you have , we can probably assume its t25 but is it air or water cooled, current fuel, year etc? Add these to your signature, nobody can help otherwise.
next is what do you want from the van? Economy? Performance? Reliability?
also budget is important, if you only have £500 that limits your options
finally whats wrong with the current engine?
But most of all you should spend a few days trawing the alternative engine forums here and on the yard

I have currently got a mk2 gti engine in my t25 at the moment that just keeps in going wrong, from the metering head to cam belt and a few other things that have gone wrong.
I really want to put a engine in there that would have originally been from a t25 as standard and that's reliable more than anything.
Ideally I want to spend around £800 for engine and gearbox in very good working order and that's been well looked after. not to sure if I am a bit optimistic with that price for all of it though.
Cheers
