I.C.E. Big Amps n' Stuff ? Head Unit Needed ???????

Right ... For the record i know jack $' about stereogrammes in cars !

!
BUT im after putting a reasonably loud [not stupid loud !] sound system in the the ole' camper. Ideally not cutting huge bass bin holes in the seat base, but would like a bit of a boom !
Dont object to a couple [4 tops' !] of holes for smallish speakers here and there, but no major holeying' ....
Q..

Does the amplifier whatsit power ALL the speakers or just the bass
Q..

If the amp powers all the speakers, could i totally do away with the head unit [fit an old looking radio in the hole or a bank] and just run a direct feed to the amp from my SlyPod to the amp [im assuming SlyPod acts as pre amp, and volume + type of sound would be regulated via SlyPod controls

Aldi's regularly sell a car stereo that does MP3, has a slot for an SD/MMC card, and also a mini usb socket on the front to plug in an MP3 player. I got mine in about January of this year for £50. A definate bargain. Obviously doesn't sound as good as a £300 Sony/Alpine, but for £50 with all them features it's something I can live with.

problem with binning the head unit is that you will have very limited control over the volume, the amp will havfe a gain or level setting, which should be set at initial install and not tamperered with thereafter. say you plug your sly right in to the amp, you'll either have it really quiet or really distorted, just the nature of the beast! you would be far better getting a head unit with an aux input. hide this under the drivers seat. then get your old style stereomaphone and fit it in the dash, from it's out put, connect to the aux input, set the volume on old unit and leave it, use the new unit to adjust listening level. to listen to sly pod swap it into the aux input!
if you choose to run all the speakers via an amp then you will need at least a four channel amp. personally i would run full range speakers from the head unit and then, just put a sub on to an amp! get the best quality you can afford, as mentioned the cheaper head unit won't sound as good and a £300 sony but the louder you get the more noticable it will be!
i would also advise that where possible mount speakers in a fully sealed enclosure, a box with a bass port (a big hole) will be louder but the sound quality won't be as good, the speaker won't be as responsive and it won't last very long at loud levels.
lastly if you are going loud or long you will want to consider uprating your alternator!
in previous installs i've run jbl gear, in my oppinion it's the best and sounded great when i had 2.8kw in the boot!!

if you need any help just shout!

if you go for a sub get one in a ready made enclosure that has been ported (make sure it is the right specs for the sub and not a diy jobbie that the idiots in the shop are trying to flog)then you dont have to mess on with port calculations etc..look at the RMS of the sub and amp, match them up and not the max power. the rms is the constant rating where as the max power is what the unit can cope/supply for a fraction of a second (annoys me when people quote max power and not rms)have a look on the boy racer sites for set ups/wiring, it can get quite obsessive
