Have acquired an old engine for spares. I want to clean up the bits and then coat them with something to avoid surface rust appearing. Any ideas? Cheers, Mitch.

Yep, bought it last year from up north. Sister came to visit at the weekend and delivered it for me. One mint mac head and one dodgy genuine head.

We use rustguard 30 at work produced by Pennine lubricants, stops all our finish machined parts from going rusty .

Thanks Dazco, however, it's not exactly sold in major chains! Typical as it's just the sort of product I'd like. Cheers.

take vaseline, dissolve it in acetone, spray it on, acetone evaporates, vaseline gives perfect protection forever

Good tip about the Vaseline although I just want to do a couple of bits as and when. Thus, I may buy a large pot of Vaseline And warm it up so that it's runny, sooo tempted to say 'then I can dip my parts in it for a thorough coating' but that would be too obvious. Instead I'll liberally apply with a brush - to my 'parts', of course.
Thanks for that.

There's nothing better than dipping your parts in warm Vaseline he says whilst touching himself inappropriately.
