T25 5-speed gearbox- are they all dog-leg configuration

Just wondering - are all T25 5-speed gearboxes in the "dog leg" configuration, i.e. 1st gear is a crawler gear left and back from reverse?

To my knowledge yes. Mine certainly is. 1st is as you say a crawler gear. Folk sometimes assume (incorrectly) that putting in a stock 5-speed will be better than a 4-speed but they're not unless you mess with gear ratios (expensive) and the ONLY time I ever use 1st is at a t-junction at the top of a hill, otherwise 2nd is smoother for virtually all pull aways. The gubbins underneath the gearstick is also markedly different.

5 speeders should be banished to a dark place for eternity!!!

I'm currently running a 4 speed and a 5 speed. Some days I drive both, oh what misfortunes I've nearly suffered at traffic lights. When in what I believe to be first, the van moves backwards! It's a somewhat dangerous past time to own 2 vans!

Cheers for the clarification. I now have a 5-speed petrol box (code unknown - case is too corroded), assumed by the previous owner to be 4-speed. I haven't actually tried 1st yet, pulls away nicely in "2nd" with my newly installed tdi :)

The 4-speed diesel box that came out might be re-geared to suit the tdi in the future..
