Yes, you will need a diesel tank. There are two types if diesel tank, one for pick up and a different one for a van.

If you want a rev counter and glow plug light you will need diesel clocks but you don't need them otherwise.

So will a pick up one do the job??

Oh yes, I put diesel clocks with tacho in too, but looking the petrol tacho should be fairly simple to convert for diesel square wave signal

Is there anyway I can find out how to do that... Square wave means nothing to me :?

I looked everywhere for info on being able to use my petrol tachometer with my tdi but to no avail. I ended up buying a diesel tacho. Which isn't particularly accurate.

Later on I bought a Scangauge 2. Now I never look at the dash gauges except the fuel gauge.

The petrol tacho runs at the same input frequency/revs as the TDI ECU engine speed signal, so if the tacho is sensitive enough to read the 12v signal it will work with that. If not, it can be modified by altering the resistors on the tacho PCB (the Subaru folk do this), Google it.

If using a TD alt with W output, and a TD tacho, as Tom said, the reading will only be approximate unless you adjust the tacho using the pot hidden under the paper label on the back.

Re. tank, I think bus/pickup only differ for the Syncro. I don't see why a 2WD 2.1 tank couldn't be used for a TDI, as you have the feed/return connections needed ?
